Haldi Kumkum/Roli Chawal Tilak is an auspicious part of beginning the ceremonies in all parts of India.
The tilak is believed to represent the third eye/the ajna chakra, which is associated with higher consciousness and spiritual awakening. It is believed that wearing a tilak, can help one connect with the divine and gain access to higher levels of awareness.
On Raksha Bandhan, the first of many traditions a sister follows when tying rakhi is to apply Tilak on the forehead. It is said to promote positivity and spirituality leading to purifying their thoughts! The Tilak is completed by sticking rice on the temple, and all sisters ensures that the rice stays on the forehead since rice destroys any evil surrounding her brother.
